Free ADT Plugin: Add Instant Analog Double-Track Warmth [076] ๐ต๐ถ๐ต
AIR Tape Double Track โ a free ADT-style plugin with a believable tape-inspired character
Hi,
if your widening still feels phasey, or your synths collapse into a blurry chorus effect when you push them wide, this plugin is worth checking out. It delivers tape-like movement without the static, delay-based signature most digital doublers create.
AIR Tape Double Track is based on the original ADT system developed at Abbey Road in the 1960s by engineer Ken Townsend for The Beatles.
The classic setup used two tape machines, with a variable-frequency oscillator modulating the capstan speed of the second machine. Because the tape speed continually drifted, the delay and pitch offset were never fixed.
That subtle, irregular movement is what made ADT feel more natural than fixed-delay widening.
The plugin recreates this behaviour through tape-delay elements, varispeed-style modulation, and timing fluctuations. It also introduces controls the original hardware never offered:
selectable modulation shapes
independent left/right settings
drive and phase options
bass-mono tools for controlled low-end playback
These additions help you avoid the comb filtering, metallic tone, or โdigital smearโ that often appears in standard doublers.
Practical uses
Synths that need width without collapsing into chorus
Vocals that benefit from subtle thickening with minimal artifacts
Guitars that respond well to cohesive stereo movement
Bass parts where width requires strict phase control for club systems
It isnโt a literal emulation of vintage tape machines. Instead, it captures the musical drift and movement of the original ADT concept while offering greater precision for modern electronic music workflows.
